JOHN COATES CARTER (1859-1927)
 
John Coates Carter was the architect who designed Prestbury War Memorial. He was born and raised in Norwich, articled to a local architect J A Pearce who was noted for designing the Town Hall at Yarmouth. John Coates Carter later became a pupil of and then assistant to the London based architect John Pollard Seddon (a leading exponent of the Arts & Crafts movement). Carter attended RA Schools becoming a FRIBA on April 30th 1900. He was President of the Cardiff, South Wales & Monmouth Architects Society with his professional practice (largely ecclesiastical) based in Cardiff from 1880's until c 1910. Most of his significant works are associated with Wales
An article by Chris Arnot in The Telegraph October 18th 2011 relating to The Red House, Penarth, which was Coate's family home in 1901, made reference to Carter's obsession with heavy intricate locks. He apparently collected German & Swiss variety of locks from the 16th century and even had one on the airing cupboard which came with a key weighty enough to have been wielded by a jailor at Newgate Prison
John Coates Carter retired to Prestbury (1916) where he re-built and enlarged the Manor House in The Burgage and made a number of alterations to the parish church of St Marys where he was a churchwarden.

Boulton & Sons

The Boulton family were master masons,carvers and eccelsiastical sculptors. The business was founded under the title Boulton & Swales during the 1850's and was based at Westminster Bridge, London, with branches in Birmingham and Worcester. They won a medal at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and exhibited not only at the Royal Academy in 1859 but at several Paris exhbitions.
On the death of his brother William, Richard Lockwood Boulton amalgamated the firm in one place at Cheltenham (1866) with his four sons as managers. The firm gave Cheltenham a reputation as a centre of ecclesiastical art and church furnishings in marble, stone and wood. In February 1908 it was appointed Ecclesiastical Church Furnishers to Edward VII. Richard Lockwood Boulton retired in 1893 having handed over the business to his sons and later died in 1905.
 
Among the most notable local works were Neptune's Fountain (1892/3)  Cheltenham's Boer War Memorial (1907) and Cheltenham's Town War Memorial (c1921)
 
Richard William Boulton was the stonemason responsible for the building of Prestbury's War I Memorial which was dedicated in 1920. He lived locally at Marle Hill Court, and was a church warden at St Mary's Church, Prestbury. St Nicholas Church was built on land donated by Mr Boulton. Mr Boulton died in 1935 and his memorial plaque along with those of his daughter and son-in-law are inside St Nicholas Church.The Boulton name is also commemorated by a road off Swindon Lane, and the Boulton Wing at Delancey Hospital.
 
Boulton & Sons ceased trading in 1970.

WORLD WAR I MEMORIAL – High Street, Prestbury.

Inscription – Pray for the souls of the men from this parish who gave their lives for their country in the Great War 1914-18.

Previous History of the War Memorial

A fund was started long before the end of the Great War to build a Memorial to those who had been killed. In December 1919 a tree in the middle of the village was decorated for the Children's Treat on the spot right where the Memorial was to be erected. The plot of land on which the tree stood was bought for £20 and collections in the village raised another £250 to pay for the 15th century cross designed by John Coates Carter.

Bearing the names of the 41 men who had died in the war, it was dedicated on Sunday April 11th 1920. The weather was dreadful. Rain fell almost incessantly all morning, but ceased miraculously as a procession head by the Bishop of Gloucester, the clergy and choir, left the churchyard for the dedication ceremony. Both the architect and builder has strong connections with Prestbury.

Recent History

Very sadly on October 25th 2011 the War Memorial was badly vandalised and the spire broken from its base causing great outcry and anguish to the community. Meister Masonry of Painswick in an act of considerable generosity stepped in and offered to replace the damaged spire free of charge. The Parish Council gratefully accepted this offer and on Saturday April 14th 2012 the memorial was rededicated by the Bishop of Tewkesbury.

 

WORLD WAR TWO COMMEMORATIONS

 
There were plans in 1950 to erect a second memorial but this was was not proceeded with when the original plans were lost and as a consequence there is no existing World War II stone monument with the names of those from Prestbury who died during the Second World War. Efforts are ongoing by Prestbury Parish Council to include their names in an appropriate way.
 
However both the following facilities are dedicated to their memory and sacrifice.
 
 
PRESTBURY MEMORIAL PLAYING FIELD
The Prestbury Road Playing Field was acquired by Prestbury Parish Council in 1952 as a general recreational playing field for the use of parishioners in memory of those who died during the Second World War. There is a small plaque on the main kissing gate entrance in Prestbury Road.

 

PRESTBURY MEMORIAL TRUST

Prestbury Memorial Trust grew out of Prestbury District Nursing Association which was founded in 1922. By the end of the Second World War it was decided that a memorial to the men who had died in that conflict should be a Nurse's Home. A plot of land became available in Deep Street in 1947 and Mrs De La Bere gave £150 to purchase it in memory of her son, killed in the First World War, and her grandson, killed in the Second World War.

The New Home Fund opened for contributions towards the building and on November 12th 1949 the Memorial Home bungalow at 10 Deep Street was dedicated by the vicar and opened by Mrs Winsome Cumming. The property became the home and surgery for the District Nurse from 1949 to 1981. A Village Warden service was established in 1969 visiting the elderly and housebound in a neighbourly capacity. The Memorial Trust further developed providing Christmas lunch for over a 100 people and organising a regular Lunch Club for elderly parishioners. Volunteers work in teams to run the Lunch Club, provide transport and home visitors call on the sick and housebound.
